Because joy loves a head start

October isn’t just for pumpkins. It’s the perfect time to start prepping for a joyful, stress-free holiday season. There seems to be a lot of stress in the world these days, and what better time to reconnect with family loved ones and share in the birth of Christ?
Here’s how I ease into the spirit without rushing and enjoy the season.
1. Declutter with Intention

Before the decorations come out, I clear space, physically and emotionally. One drawer, one shelf, one mindset shift at a time.
As I walk through each room, I picture my holiday inventory and where I want to display my treasures. I always start on the main floor. Usually, where the big tree goes, and yes, I have more than one! It’s such a great feeling to begin with a clean slate.
TIP: I keep a notepad close by to jot down ideas as they come to me, whether it’s a gift thought, a ritual I want to protect, or a cozy corner I want to style.
2. Stock up on Cozy

I refresh my stash of candles, teas, warm cocktails, and soft textures. Think: cinnamon, clove, and a blanket that feels like a hug. October is when I start layering in the comfort, one scent, one sip, one soft thing at a time.
Check the candle drawer for seasonal favorites (spiced orange, pine, vanilla chai), and restock your scents. You can never have too many candles.
It’s also time to pull out the cozy layers, pillows, throws, and textures that invite nesting. It’s not just about warmth; it’s about creating a space that feels like a sanctuary.
TIP: I keep a small tray or basket in a central spot, like a coffee table, with rotating cozy essentials: a favorite mug, a seasonal book, and a favorite candle for winding down.
3. Gift Planning = Joy Planning

I start making my gift list in October, not just with things, but with experiences, rituals, and handmade touches. A cozy catch-up with a friend. A handwritten recipe card tucked into a jar of homemade granola. A photo book of memories.
This early brainstorming gives me time to be thoughtful, creative, and calm. It also helps me notice those little hints people drop in conversation, like a favorite scent, a book they’ve been meaning to read, or a color they’re drawn to.
TIP: I keep a running list in my planner or phone, organized by person. I also note where I want to shop, such as local markets, small boutiques, and even craft stores. Bonus: no panic shopping in December.
4. Designing the Holidays

This is fun for me. I start pinning seasonal recipes, table settings, and DIYs. Not to chase perfection, but to gather inspiration. Pinterest becomes my seasonal mood board, helping me visualize the kind of holiday I want to create. It’s a gentle way to ease into the season and spark creativity without pressure.
TIP: I create a few themed boards, like “Zesty Christmas, Holiday Rituals, or Cozy Corners so I can return to them when I’m ready to decorate, cook, or gift with intention.
5. Traditions/Treasures

I try to think about the traditions I want to focus on each year. It gets harder each year; everyone is so busy. Cookie day, ornament night, trimming the tree, Zoo lights. These are the moments that matter, the ones that anchor the season with intention and joy.
Before the calendar fills up, take time to reflect on what traditions bring you joy. Discuss with your family. This can be the perfect time to focus on someone who might not be close by. You don’t have to plan every detail, make space for the things that make the holidays feel JOYFUL.
TIP: I use my Holiday Traditions Tracker to jot down ideas as they come to me. It’s not about doing more, it’s about doing what matters most, with heart.
